Excerpt:

Stephen Elliot, Research Director, IDC took the time to explain ITIL's role in business outcomes with ITO America.

Elliot finds that as technology executives are under increasing pressure to contain costs while managing and delivering higher levels of IT service. Technology alone cannot accomplish this goal. What's required is balance of investment into IT, business staff training, technology and, most importantly, process standardization to drive business outcomes.

During the past seven years, ITIL has been significantly deployed and adopted by IT organizations, enabling these organizations to utilize a common language and framework for process standardization. For many organizations, the definition of an infrastructure 'change' has been difficult.

In summary, CIOs have begin the IT transformation by accepting the fact that process standardization is a valuable investment in cost avoidance, operational excellence, and business outcomes. The right technology with staff development can ensure success over the long term, no matter how success is defined by IT and business leadership.
