Dell IT reduces the time and cost of deploying systems by two thirds, ultimately consolidating servers, with Altiris Deployment Solution.

The ability to improve internal efficiencies can mean the difference between success and failure for businesses in a wide range of fields, especially for a company the size of Dell. In September 2003, Dell launched an initiative to maximize efficiencies across all Dell IT operational processes.

The company wanted to develop global standards that could be consistently utilized by all Dell business units to reduce time required to create and provision servers. With 24,000 servers worldwide, the project had the potential to save significant time and money for the company.

Other initiatives were to deploy a global infrastructure and set of standards for the automated creation and provisioning of Microsoft Windows servers and to optimize IT personnel resources.

To find the best automated solution for server creation and provisioning, Dell IT developed a set of baseline requirements. The solution needed to support Microsoft Windows pre-boot environments, provide advanced automation and custom scripting, include the ability to roll back changes and recover from failed events, and offer the capability to perform fully unattended, hands-free deployment.

Christopher Casias, Senior Systems Engineer, Core Engineer, Dell IT, explains, 'In the end, we had very specific requirements, and Altiris was the only vendor to meet our high expectations. The fact that other groups within Dell were successfully using the product was another key factor in our decision.'
Benefits of the deployment include:

  • New processes reduce the number of administrators required to provision servers from 40 to 12, providing a better overall value to Dell
  • Altiris helped decrease provisioning time from 6 hours to 2 hours, increasing productivity
  • Enabled rapid deployment of server resources
