IT simplification solution consolidates 80 servers down to give and reduces server administration time by 38 percent.

In a fiercely competitive auto industry, Mazda North American Operations depends on information technology to provide the outstanding services that differentiate the company from competitors. Key IT initiatives include enhancing the efficiency of the supply chain, improving the effectiveness of field managers and helping customers learn more about Mazda on the Web.

For years, the Mazda North American Operations IT group relied on Dell for advice and guidance, making it only natural for the company to turn to Dell to solve the problem of server sprawl and escalating IT complexity. The recommendation was to move to a virtualized server environment.

The Dell team brought extensive virtualization expertise to the project. Ultimately the Mazda IT group chose VMware software to manage the virtual server environment because of its features and the close relationship between Dell and VMware.

Dell provided the proper solution and the best practices to consolidate the fast growing IT infrastructure; Dell PowerEdge servers running VMware ESX Server software, Dell OpenManage IT Assistant, and systems management software to simplify the server environment and help streamline operations.
The MAZDA IT Group experienced numerous benefits through the deployment of the virtualized server environment, including:

  • Virtualization delivers consolidation from 80 servers down to 5, a 33 percent infrastructure reduction
  • Simplified server environment reduces server administration time by 38 percent, giving IT staff more time to further business objectives
  • Planned use of virtualization tools within the business continuity strategy will reduce disaster recovery time from days to hours

Virtualization has given the Mazda IT staff back its verve. The IT staff now has the time to explore innovative new initiatives, such as collaboration and productivity tools, that will have a big payoff for the company down the road.
