The primary driver behind this EMA research report is the need to understand the impact that server virtualization and cloud services are having on the day-to-day priorities and activities of network managers. It was also compelled by a set of findings from EMA's seminal report the responsible cloud, published in January 2010.

Key findings from this effort include some expected results as well as some surprises. Firstly, as expected, cloud services adoption continues to grow, as more and more types of workloads are being deployed into the cloud. Next, network managers are still broadly involved, but other groups are rising in importance and responsibility. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this research revealed that organizations embracing cloud services exhibited a clear lead in sophistication and operational maturity over those who have only embraced server virtualization.
